"One boy made fun of me because one day, I had really curly hair, and I wear glasses normally, and I also bite my nails. I feel like everyone is different in their own way, so, people shouldn't try to make them feel bad because of that."
-Elle on how she relates to her character, Phoebe (aged 10).

MEDIA > TRANSCRIPTS > MOVIEFONE THE NINES UNSCRIPTED

Elle appeared on AOL Moviefone's 'Unscripted Interview' series with her co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa McCarthy, to promote their film The Nines while at the Sundance Film Festival.
Sunday January 21 2007

Ryan Reynolds: Alright, welcome to Moviefone. This is Moviefone Unscripted, I'm Ryan Reynolds, and I'm here with Melissa McCarthy, and Elle Fanning.. hi Elle. And we are gonna answer and ask some questions of our own, and some from each other. Alright, in the film The Nines there are three different scenarios, in the film, basically it's three separate parts that all sort of tie in, in one interconnecting way. Um, each of us play three different roles throughout the movie, you know - can you talk about your three different roles, and how they tie together?
Melissa: Well, in the first one I'm your publicist, to your actor. And then in the second one I am your best friend, um, which is not a stretch. (laughs)
Ryan: No.
Melissa: And then in the third one is, I'm your wife. Also not a stretch. Too much?
Ryan: No, it's funny. It's a documentary, basically.
Melissa: (laughs) And, they tie - it's kind of tricky to say how they tie together. Can I say that?
Ryan: Well, I don't know.
Melissa: You'll see.
Ryan: I'm just gonna say that you can, you're on your own right now.
Melissa: Thank you. Supportive. *Elle laughs*
Ryan: That's what I do.
Melissa: No, I mean they all revolve around whatever your character is, so we're there to help you.
Ryan: Like, the word 'The Nines' is a mystery, we're trying to uncover what that - what the significance is.
Melissa: Yeah. Sometimes I'm trying not to help you find, mostly you're trying to find out what that is.
Ryan: Yeah.
Melissa: Maybe I'm not helping so much, but I'm always kind of your right hand person in whatever capacity that comes along. And, it's hard to say cause it's kind of the fun of it, to find out. I don't want to give it away.
*Elle pretends to point her finger sternly at Melissa, who laughs*
Elle: Don't give it away!
Melissa: Elle, do you think that you have to prove yourself because you're younger than the other actors you're working with? Or, what is it like showing up on the first day on set?
Elle: Really fun, I get to see, you know, I get to meet all my actors, you know, who I'm going to work with. And then I get to, just um, just see the set and everything, it's really fun, and meet all the cast and crew and everything.
Melissa: Do you ever feel, do you ever feel a little nervous cause you're younger, or?
Elle: (shakes head) No!
Melissa: No?
Elle: No.
Melissa: Never? No, you don't seem like you do.
Elle: Yeah! I don't!
*Melissa laughs*
Elle: *reading question from script* In 'The Nines' you play different roles in three separate stories. Was it challenging having to prepare for these three different characters?
Ryan: Uh, it was difficult to prepare three different characters for you movie. You know, it's a dream come true as an actor, as well, I mean you get to play three different characters in one film, basically. But we treated it like it was three separate movies, and thankfully we never crossed over in the physical production of the film. Like, we never shot, you know, a piece from sequence one and three in the same day. So, it was really fun, and it was really interesting for me and I also think that, you know, it came with significant challenges which are to, you know, not be self-indulged with these three different roles, to not make these three different roles so completely different from one another just to do it. You know, it was exciting to really kind of find some emotional dimensions within them, but weren't so completely outside the realm of the first one, or the second one, or the third one.
Ryan: *reading from script* Unscripted.
Elle: *laughing* It's to me!
Ryan: Wow. This is what I'd look like on American Idol. *makes a straight expression, and Elle laughs* So, did you, um, when you were preparing for the movie did you have to do any special looks for each sequence, or, each part in the movie?
Elle: Nope.
Ryan: In the three different parts, no? You got to look the same?
Elle: Yes, I did.
Ryan: Yeah?
Elle: Yeah.
Ryan: Aren't you lucky.
Elle: Yeah, I have, I had curly hair though.
Ryan: You did?
Elle: Yeah. Instead of straight.
Ryan: You like that. What's your favorite thing about shooting a movie like this?
Elle: Um, well... just working!
Ryan: You like working?
Elle: Yeah. I don't, I just feel weird when I'm not working.
Ryan: Really? So you really like to work, you're a born workaholic?
Elle: Yeah. *laughs* Yeah.
Ryan: How old are you?
Elle: I'm eight.
Ryan: Oh God. *Elle laughs*
Melissa: Ryan, when you watch your movies for the first time do you, uh, can you watch yourself? Does it make you a litle nervous, or?
Ryan: What, do I like, close my eyes in fear?
Melissa: Can you, yeah, are you able to -
Ryan: You get hypercritical when you watch yourself, a little bit, so it's really hard to see the whole thing as a whole. You just kind of, you know, try to remove yourself enough but it's easier when you're playing a real character - I mean, somebody that is pretty outside the realm of your own persona. That's a little easier. But when you're playing roles that, you know, touch on things that you actually are, that's a little bit different. Difficult for me. Alright, thank you Melissa, Elle, and, Moviefone. Please check out our movie The Nines.
*Elle starts clapping and the audience joins in*
