"I hate the "young trying to look older" vibe. I'd much rather look like a five-year-old than a 21-year-old. And I think that when i'm 21, I'm not going to dress super old either. I like the girlie girl too much.
-Elle on looking young/sophisticated, not young/trying to look older (aged 13).

Trivia

. Elle's big sister, Dakota, visited the set to support Elle filming this movie. She caused quite a stir with the young students at the school Elle was filming at.

. Daniel Barnz offered Elle the part of Phoebe after watching her in Babel and The Door in the Floor.

. The first draft for the script was written 1 year before Elle was even born.

. To prepare for an emotional scene towards the end of the movie, Elle spent the whole day acting very sad and unusually quiet. Her Grandma told everyone on set to excuse Elle for the behaviour, and that she was getting into the mood for the scene.

. Premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, to rave reviews.

. This movie was Elle's first lead role in a full length feature, Day 72 with Sarah being her first lead in a short.

Notable Quotes

"I watched Elle after the scene which you just described, where she's so amazing and so heartbreaking and so upset.. and she kinda hops off the bed and goes "wasn't that fun?". I forgot about the joy of pretend, she reinvigorated that in me and reminded me. I've since forgotten it but I appreciate it!"
- Felicity Huffman ('Hillary Lichten')

"When I met her for the first time, there was like this marvelous ball of light and you can tell because you're sitting across from her. There is something that is so luminous about her. And I realized that to have that quality in this film was critical. Because it does confront some difficult and dark things. To have that sort of beauty and innocence right there was a no-brainer."
- Daniel Barnz (Director)

"You will not believe Elle Fanning in this movie - she's off the charts. "
- Patricia Clarkson ('Ms. Dodger')
