"One boy made fun of me because one day, I had really curly hair, and I wear glasses normally, and I also bite my nails. I feel like everyone is different in their own way, so, people shouldn't try to make them feel bad because of that."

Synopsis
Sam Dawson has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. He works at a Starbucks and is obsessed with the Beatles. He has a daughter with a homeless woman; she abandons them as soon as they leave the hospital. He names his daughter Lucy Diamond (after the Beatles song), and raises her. But as she reaches age 7 herself, Sam's limitations start to become a problem at school; she's intentionally holding back to avoid looking smarter than him. The authorities take her away, and Sam shames high-priced lawyer Rita Harrison into taking his case pro bono. In the process, he teaches her a great deal about love, and whether it's really all you need.
Elle's Character
While the majority of Lucy Diamond Dawson's character is played by Dakota Fanning, Elle's memorable few scenes as this central character are what began her career as an actress. This overview will discuss the character of Lucy throughout the film, not only in her short time as Elle.
Lucy is the daughter of Sam Dawson, a mentally challenged man struggling to raise his intelligent daughter. Her mother left the family when Lucy was an infant, simply unable to cope with the enormity of a family in which she was essentially the sole parent. She would be responsible for two dependants who would, potentially, rely on her both financially, and emotionally, for the many years of Lucy's childhood.
It is while she is apart from her beloved father that Lucy learns most about what love means. When she finds the answer in her heart, she is able to share the message with the adults in her life who have forgotten. "All you need is love," she tells the lawyer campaigning for her permanent removal from Sam's custody.
A deeply intelligent, loving, and loyal child, Lucy Diamond Dawson (played with wisdom and charm by both Dakota and Elle) is precious character in a beautiful film.
Trivia
. Elle's character (who she shares with big sister, Dakota) is named Lucy Diamond from The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Michelle Pfeiffer's character's name is Rita Harrison, from the song "Lovely Rita" and the last name of Beatle George Harrison.
