"One boy made fun of me because one day, I had really curly hair, and I wear glasses normally, and I also bite my nails. I feel like everyone is different in their own way, so, people shouldn't try to make them feel bad because of that."
-Elle on how she relates to her character, Phoebe (aged 10).

MEDIA > FILMS > THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR
Synopsis
Alternately tragic and comic, an exploration of the complexities of love in both its brightest and darkest corners. Adapted from John Irving's best-selling novel A Widow for One Year, the film is set in the privileged beach community of East Hampton, New York and chronicles one pivotal summer in the lives of famous children's book author Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) and his beautiful wife Marion (Kim Basinger). Their once-great marriage has been strained by tragedy. Her resulting despondency and his subsequent infidelities have prevented the couple from confronting a much-needed change in their relationship. Eddie O'Hare, the young man Ted hires to work as his summer assistant, is the couple's unwitting yet willing pawn - and, ultimately, the catalyst in the transformation of their lives.
Elle's Character
Ruth is the four year old daughter of Ted and Marion Cole. For such a small girl she has undergone horrifying loss in her short life, losing both her elder brothers in a tragic accident. In addition, her parents have little time for their sole child in their newfound grief, as they engage in adulterous liasions that are slowly destroying their own lives and marriage. Yet Ruth remains a strong, intelligent, albeit suspicious child. She is initially wary of Eddie, for example, the man with whom her mother commits adultery, but eventually accepts him for his charm.
Though Ruth has a somewhat closer relationship with her father than mother, she is essentially cared for by a sulky, very young Nanny, Alice, on whom the family's problems take their toll.
Ruth has an obsession with looking at the framed photos in the house, in an opening scene dragging a chair down the hallway to look at one too high to see.
Trivia
. The casting notes for the character of Ruth specified a preference for twins, yet, in the end, the role went to our Elle! It seems as though the casting directors for this film were impressed by Elle's acting ability, as the role is significant in the storyline and difficult for a child Elle's age to undertake with a twin with which to share the load. Well done Elle for winning this role!
. Elle celebrated her 5th birthday on the set of this movie. She was given a Barbie doll from the director, a bracelet from Kim Basinger and a coloring book from Jeff Bridges.
. In order to create a distance and longing between the characters of Marion and Ruth, the director purposely kept Elle and Kim Basinger apart, though Elle yearned to be with her.
. When time called for Elle to cry for one scene, her performance was so realistic that Jeff Bridges thought Elle was actually upset and was genuinely trying to calm her down.
Notable Quotes
"My original plan was to not talk to Elle at all, but to direct her through the actors that she was working with. I did that a little bit, but I very quickly found that I didnft have to play games with her. You could talk to her like you'd talk to an adult."
- Tod Williams (Director)
"We had a great time working together. It's wonderful to work with a child, especially one that's as talented and as free as Elle. We used to draw together all the time, and I made books for her, like I used to do with my girls."
- Jeff Bridges ('Ted Cole')
"She is the cutest thing I've ever seen in my whole life. She's so together; she's like a little woman. So smart!"
- Bijou Phillips ('Alice')
"Elle is needless to say magically gifted. She is the most beautiful definition of a child. I simply fell in love with her. It was very hard for me when the time came to say goodbye to her at the end of the movie and I've missed her ever since."
- Kim Basinger ('Marion Cole')
