Tell me what dead is
Ruth: "Dead means they're broken?" Ted: "Well...their bodies are broken, yes." Ruth: "And they're under the ground?" Ted: "Their bodies are, yes." Ruth: "Tell me what dead is." Ted: "When you look at the photographs of Thomas and Timothy, do you remember the stories of what they're doing?" Ruth: "Yes." Ted: "Well, Thomas and Timmy are alive in your imagination." Ruth: "It makes me sad to think about them." Ted: "It makes me sad too honey." Ruth: "But mommy's sadder."
A sound that's trying to be quiet
Ruth: "Daddy, I had a dream. I heard a sound." Ted: "What kind of sound?" Ruth: "It's in the house, but it's trying to be quiet." Ted: "Hmmm. Well, let's go look for it then. A sound that's trying to be quiet. What did it sound like?" Ruth: "It was a sound like someone trying not to make a sound."
Mice are everywhere
[Ted tells a story to Ruth, who is already tucked in bed.] Ted: "When Thomas was just your age, and Timothy was still in diapers, Tommy heard a sound." Ruth: "Did they both wake up?" Ted: "Oh, Tom woke up, but Tim did not. And Tom woke up his father, and asked him to get rid of that sound. 'There's the sound again,' Tom whispered to his father. 'It's a monster!' he cried. 'It's just a mouse crawling between the walls,' his father said, and bumped the wall hard with his hand. And the mouse scurried away. 'It's just a mouse, that's all,' Tom said, and he quickly fell asleep. But Tim, he stayed awake all night long, and everytime that thing crawling between the walls came crawling back, he'd hit the wall, and he'd listen to the monster scurry away, dragging his thick wet fur, and horns, and legs with it. And that..." Ruth: "Is the end of the story. Where's Mommy?" Ted: "Mommy...it's her turn at the other house, remember, it's my turn tomorrow night. But she'll be here in the morning, okay? Okay." Ruth: "Are there any mice in this house?" Ted: "Oh, everyone has mice. Mice are everywhere."
Where are the feet?
[Ted carries Ruth into Eddie's room. She wants to see one of the pictures on the wall.] Ted: "Eddie, Ruth wanted to be sure that one of the photographs was still here, she gets anxious if she can't see them or if they get moved. Which one was it, sweetie?" Ruth: "There it is!" Ted: "Ah." Ruth: "It's just a little broken but he won't die, right? Not yet." Ted: "No." (to Eddie) "Ruthie had a dream." Ruth: "Where are the feet?" Ted: "Ah. Sorry Eddie. We've got in the habit of showing Ruth the pictures and if we don't she gets very worked up." Eddie: "That's okay. You can see them anytime." Ruth: (as she's carried from the room) "What did he do?"
Just paper
[Ruth explains the story behind one of the pictures on the wall to Eddie.] Ruth: "It was early in the morning, and Mommy was just waking up. Thomas and Timothy crawled under the covers, and Daddy took the picture in France. But what did you did to the feet?" Eddie: "Um, maybe it never happened. You know, maybe it was just a dream." Ruth: "No." Eddie: "I guess it's just a mystery." Ruth: "No, it's paper." Eddie: "Don't you want to go back to bed?" Ruth: "Yes. Bring the picture. It's my picture, it's not yours." Eddie: "That's true."
Am I going to die?
[In the doctor's office, Marion comforts Ruth as she has a cut on her finger stitched up.] Marion: "It's okay." Ruth: "Am I going to die?" Marion: "No, you're not going to die. You're not going to die."
Did you got mad at her?
[Marion says goodbye to Ruth in her car.] Marion: "Remember honey, don't cry when the doctor takes the stitches out. I promise you it won't hurt." Ruth: "Can I keep the stitches to show you?" Marion: (to Eddie) "You can take her anywhere for lunch. All she ever eats is grilled cheese and french fries." Ruth: "And ketchup!" Marion: "And ketchup." [Later, Ruth leaves the doctor's office with Eddie.] Ruth: "Do we get the picture now?" Eddie: "What picture?" Ruth: "The feet!" Eddie: "Oh, the photograph! No, it's not ready yet." Ruth: "That's not very nice. My stitches are ready, my cut's all fixed up." Eddie: "Yeah, you know what, you're right. Let's go to the frame shop and ask them to give us the picture." [Later, in the frame shop] Eddie: (to the sales lady) "If there's no manager here there must be someone else, there must be someone else here besides you, and I'm not leaving without that photograph." Ruth: "Did you got mad at her?" Eddie: "Yes, I did." [The manager comes to the counter.] Eddie: "This is Ruth, she's four." [Ruth waves to the lady.] Manager: "What do you want from me?" Eddie: "Just the photograph. It's of Ruth's mother, she's in a bed, in a hotel room in Paris." Manager: "That is not a good picture of the boys, it's only their feet." Eddie: "Yes, I know, but Ruth likes the feet." Ruth: "Are the feet ready?" Manager: "Yes, dear. I'll go check. They should be almost ready." [She leaves, and returns with the photograph.] Manager: "There's no charge for the photograph." Ruth: "Is all the blood gone?" Manager: "Yes dear. See? It's as good as new." Eddie: "Okay, thanks."
What's a fingerprint?
[Eddie and Ruth sit eating lunch.] Eddie: "The whole rest of your life, whenever you need to feel brave, just look at your scar. Your hand will grow bigger, and your finger will grow bigger, but your scar will always stay the same size. And it will always show up in your fingerprint." Ruth: "What's a fingerprint?" Eddie: "I'll show you." [Eddie makes her fingerprint with ketchup. Later, they meet Ted back at the house.] Ruth: "Those are my fingerprints." Ted: "Oh, that's really neat Ruthie. So you were at the doctor's office? Getting the stitches taken out?" Ruth: "And we went to the beach, and we had lunch, and Eddie showed me my fingerprints!" Ted: "Oh, that's really neat Ruth. I see the photograph was ready finally." Ruth: "We got the feet back!" Ted: "You've got all this sand in your hair, Ruth, you're gonna need a bath."
Why did mommy do that?
[Eddie helps Ruth undress for her bath.] Ruth: "Did you saw that? Where are all the other pictures?" Eddie: "I don't know, maybe Mommy moved them. Gee, you got sand in your toes and in your hair and in your ears!" Ruth: "I got it in my crack too." Eddie: "Well I guess it's time for a bath then." Ruth: "But Mommy didn't move those things, what are those things?" Eddie: "They're picture hooks." Ruth: [to Ted] "Mommy moved all the pictures but not the picture hooks." Ted: "I'll give Ruth her bath." Eddie: "I'll take a quick shower." Ted: "Yeah, make it quick." Ruth: "Why did Mommy do that?" Ted: "I don't know sweetie."
Tell it!
[Ruth and Alice stand in front of the empty picture hooks, trying to remember the stories behind the pictures that used to hang there.] Ruth: "What about this one? Tell it!" Alice: "I'm sorry Ruth, I don't know! Okay? I just..." Ruth: "This is the one with Thomas and the tall hat. Timothy is trying to reach Thomas' hat, but he can't reach Thomas' hat, because Thomas is standing on a ball. He got mad and started a fight." Alice: "Is the fight in the picture?" Ruth: "No, the fight was after the picture you dummy!" Alice: "Okay, we're gonna go watch a movie." Ruth: "No, no! NO!" Alice: "Ruthie, stop it!" Ruth: "NO! NO!"
