"One boy made fun of me because one day, I had really curly hair, and I wear glasses normally, and I also bite my nails. I feel like everyone is different in their own way, so, people shouldn't try to make them feel bad because of that."
-Elle on how she relates to her character, Phoebe (aged 10).

Elle Fanning will sing in Nutcracker, The Untold Story
March 3, 2009. By Fred Topel

Elle Fanning, who plays Mary in Nutcracker: The Untold Story, told a group of reporters that the film remains faithful to the Tchaikovsky ballet. It simply adds lyrics to the instrumental score.

"It's the normal ballet music, but they just add words to it," Fanning said in a group interview last week in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was promoting Phoebe in Wonderland. "It's a musical, but it's the same story."

Tim Rice wrote the lyrics, and Fanning was well prepared to perform. "I love singing," the 10-year-old sister of Dakota Fanning said. "I take voice lessons."

Nathan Lane plays Uncle Albert, who gives Mary the nutcracker that comes to life. John Turturro plays the Rat King. Fanning got to sing with Broadway legend Lane.

"It was really good," she said. "I sing a solo with Nathan Lane, so it was great."

In other news, Fanning's older sister Dakota is repotedly gunning for a role in the Twilight sequel New Moon. Elle is a fan and said that she hopes she can join in too once she is old enough to play any of the books' characters.

"I'm reading the first book right now, and I saw the movie, so yeah," Fanning said.

Hopefully by books three or four, Fanning will find some other characters she'd like to play. Right now, her favorite has already been cast. "Well, everyone likes Bella the most," she said.

Nutcracker is scheduled for a Christmas release, though there is no studio attached to distribute the Andrei Konchalovsky film yet.
