ELLE > DAKOTA'S QUOTES
-On family filming arrangements
My mom was with me the whole time [filming Push in Hong Kong] and my dad came to visit. My mom is my best friend and my whole life. And while I was filming this movie, my sister was in Budapest with my grandmother filming The Nutcracker. So my dad was home alone for a few months! (2009)
-On their choice in accessories for the Kids Choice Awards
Hello Kitty is so girly, and we're definitely very girly. And we love Gwen Stefani, so we're at the right show tonight! (2007)
-On Elle's sensitive side
My sister actually read [Charlotte's Web] while we were filming; you could tell when she got to the end because she was crying her eyeballs out." (2007)
-On Elle's knitting demands
If Im on a movie, I will knit for everyone on set but then I barely do it at home, so I have to get better at knitting things for my family. The only one in my family who has a scarf is my grandmother, so I have to make sure I make one for my mum, dad and sister. My sister gets really mad at me. I started knitting her one and made the mistake of telling her, so now she just hangs over me all the time saying: Youre not knitting my scarf! So when Im just sitting there being lazy, shell bring it over and say: Start! (2007)
-On the lack of competition
My sister Elle was actually in Australia for the whole of [the Charlotte's Web] shoot. Shes eight. Shes in Babel with Brad Pitt. And she also just did a film called Reservation Road with Joaquin Phoenix and Jennifer Connelly. But theres no competition. Im just really proud of her. (2007)
-On Elle's part in Charlotte's Web
If you look at the scene where Im in the Ferris wheel, the car behind me has a little girl in a panda mask thats my sister. Shes my baby sister and my best friend, shes totally a free spirit and wild and fun and funny. We had such a great time, because my mum, my sister, my grandmother and my dad all came out to be with me in Australia where we were filming. It was really important to me because on the weekends and days off we could do fun things together. We went to Phillip Island and saw the Fairy penguins coming out of the water which was really fun. Going to the zoo and seeing all the Australian animals that we dont get to see in America was also great fun. (2006)
-On special priveliges
My family dont give me special treatment because I am an actress. I am just Dakota to them. My younger sister Elle is also an actress, so we dont really know any different. Im not envious of other peoples lives because I dont think my life would be half as wonderful as it is if I wasnt an actress. I would never wish for anything that I dont already have. (2006)
-On family traditions
On Christmas Eve we get to open one present and it's the same present every year - we get a new pair of pyjamas to wear on, like, Christmas Day. My sister and I have matching pyjamas. We wear the same ones and we get a new one each year. And then my sister gives us a new ornament. Last year she gave me a cell phone ornament. (2006)
-On Elle's choice in decor
She loves Marilyn Monroe as well, so she has a picture of Marilyn Monroe, and [Regis Philbin's] picture in her bedroom. (2006)
-On whether she's proud of Elle
Yes, she's in Babel. She's just great, I'm so proud of her. I haven't seen Babel but... (2006)
-On Charlotte's Web
I had read the book many times. It's one of my favorite books and actually while we were doing the movie my sister was reading the book, so it was great for her to read the scene on the page, and then see it being performed, and it was great to see what it meant to her, and what it meant to me after all the years. (2006)
I read the book so many times. My mom has read it, my sister started reading it when we started the movie and it was great for her to see the scenes coming to life. (2006)
-On whether she gives Elle advice
I havent given her any advice, and not for any particular reason. I just never have. She just has gone out and done it and enjoyed it as much as I have and had fun and done great. (2006)
-On home life
I play with my sister, or play the piano or play with the dog. We have a dog now, a schnoodle named Lewellen. (2006)
-On their differences
She's my baby sister and my best friend, and she just does her own thing. We're different in many ways. My sister is totally a free spirit, wild and fun and funny. Me, I'm more organized and proper. My sister, when she was younger, she didn't care what she wore. She would put on the craziest outfits, whereas I stop to look at myself in the mirror before I go out. (2006)
-On girl scout duties
Last year my sister and I sold 750 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, so we were pretty excited about that. At $4 a box, baby, it was, like, $3,000. We did it door-to-door in Los Angeles in my aunt's neighborhood. It's getting to be that time of year again, so my sister and I will be out there soon. People didn't really notice it was us last year. When I knocked on one door, one person said, "Who is it?" I said, "Girl Scouts." They said, "We're not home." I didn't push it--I was like, no Thin Mints for you! (2006)
-On family lines
My whole family was into sports. I chose acting instead of sports. My sister and I kind of veered off. (2006)
-On the sweet side of sisterhood
She's my best friend. She's my little sister and she also acts. (2006)
My sister Elle is my best friend and she always comes to the set to visit me. With this film she stayed with me in Australia the whole time, so I was very happy about that. My mum is also like a best friend. She's the best mother in the whole wide world.
(2006)
[My mom] is a great Mom. I have the best little sister too. She's the perfect little sister. (2005)
-On matters of messiness
She's actually really messy... she has, like, 10 outfits on everyday. And then you go into my room, and it's, like, perfect.
(2004)
-On the family business
[Elle] has done a couple of movies. She was in Daddy Day Care with Eddie Murphy and she was in Door in the Floor with Kim Basinger and Jeff Bridges. So there's a family thing with me and my sister in the business.
(2005)
-On Elle's ambitions
My sister loves to draw and she's really into making her lemonade stand right now. She's like, 'I'm going to make the menus, so we can have hot lemonades and cold lemonades.' I was like, 'Hot lemonades?' She said, "'Lemonades without ice!' I said, 'Well, that's what lemonade's about - ice.' She's so funny. She's like, "'Dad, will you get the wood to build my lemonade stand?
(2006)
-On matters of hilarity
Elle makes me laugh. Just, like, looking at her makes me laugh. She'll be like, 'what are you laughing at me for?'"
(2004)
-On similarities
She's actually, now that I think about it, she's a lot like me. Her favorite color is pink, she wears her hair in pigtails, and she loves being with me.
(2004)
-On working together at last
It was our first time, I mean, she's played me at a younger age before, but never together. We just have such a fun time and I'm so glad we did get to work together and I really, just, love it.
(2004)
-On famous faces
People tell [my sister] she looks like Dakota Fanning, and she goes, "That's my sister!"
(2005)
-On Elle's gaming habits
We do everything together. We don't fight much at all. She goes through phases where all she wants to play is Life, and other phases where she's only into Monopoly. We have games that go on forever, for weeks and weeks without end. Every time she does a movie, I'm on another one. So we never really talk about work. (2005)
-On Elle's part in Babel
She just goes and does her movies. She just finished
one with Brad Pitt. She didn't actually get to meet him. She wasn't in any scenes
with him. But she was in the same movie.
(2005)
-On whether there are any plans to work with Elle
...We have not done any scenes together yet. And that would be really cool.
(2005)
There are no plans for that, but it would be fun. She played me at a younger age in Taken.
(2005)
-On Elle's idol, Marilyn Monroe
She's obsessed with Marilyn Monroe. She loves her. She thinks she's the prettiest woman in the whole world and she likes her clothes and thinks she looks like her. She wanted a Marilyn Monroe room. She wants everything Marilyn Monroe. There was an auction of all Marilyn Monroe's personal things that nobody had ever seen before and so we went to that. But before you can go preview the items there was a preview on the internet so my sister looked at all the stuff on the internet. She looked at everything and she wrote down the item number of what she wanted and it was like 10 pages of what she wanted. My mom sat down and was looking at it and realised she had marked everything except the picture of Joe DiMaggio by himself. We went to the preview of, you know all the things, and they were so nice they let her look at all the lipsticks and stuff and pretend like she was putting them on and everything, and thatfs what my sister really wanted - the beauty thing, you know, all of it. Like she wanted the lipsticks and the eyeshadow and the compact and the eyelashes and the mascara. She wanted that and so my grandmother was going to go to the auction and try and get something. The beauty supplies were in the last hour of the auction, so my grandmother was there for eight hours. And so, she realized there was a couple of sets of face cream and face powder, and that was before, you know, all of the other beauty supplies. And so she bid on that and there was a couple that sold before she got one, but she did get that she got the face cream and the face powder.
(2005)
-On getting Regis Philbin's autograph
It was 5 years ago, and this is when we met, it was a mall called fashion squares where we used to live, we had heard that you were coming and you were going to sign autographs for your new shirt and tie line, Familiar. So we came and got in line that day cause we wanted your autograph and, it was one receit per picture. And so we did it, and it says 'To Dakota, Regis Philbin'. And my sister, my sister, we didn't know that is was one purchase per picture
and she was like 2! And she didn't! And she started screaming. And she started going like this,"REGIS! REGIS! REGIS!" She wanted one so *laughs* And then everybody, you know everybody thought that she was just really little, like that she was a crying baby, and she kept on screaming "Regis! Regis!" and it was just such a long line and we had to go. It was just so funny! All the people there thought she was just a screaming baby.
(2005)
-On their dental escapades
I have 4 [teeth] on the top and 4 on the bottom, but they've all been pulled and my sister just got her two bottom teeth pulled.
(2005 )
-On the stage show 'Wicked'
I had to have my sister go see it,and my grandparents and everybody, and I just love, I just love the characters, and I loved the Wizard of Oz.
(2005)
-On what frightens them
My sister and I are so scared of thunder and lightening. And when we had the rain storm here and it was lightening at our house, we were like freaking out. We were like, it's not supposed to lightening in California, and it's not supposed to thunder here.
(2005)
-On whether she and Elle play Hide and Seek
We do, we always try. You know, what she does is she hides in our closet, and shuts the door, which is actually like what Emily does. And, you know, I always know she's in there, so I kind of walk around for like 20 minutes, "I don't know where she is..." and then she'll like jump out and I'll be like "Oh, I didn't know where you were! (laughs)
(2005)
On playing nice
Me and my sister pretend that we're at Hogwarts. But I have to pretend that I'm Harry Potter's sister, because I don't really want to be Hermione. I don't look like her, so I have to make up a character.
(2004)
I have a little sister. She's five...We don't really like to push each other around...We like to play together.
(2003)
I go home and play with my baby dolls and I play with my sister, so...I think of myself as 9 years old.
(2003)
I have always wanted to act ever since I was a little girl. I would put a blanket under my shirt and pretend that I was pregnant. Then, I would go through childbirth. My sister [played] the baby.
(2001)
On sharing a bedroom
We like the same things, but she's extremely
different. Like she's very messy and I'm extremely neat. Her side of the room is messy and my side of
the room is neat. And so all her junk goes under her
bed. Yeah, I just shove it under her bed.
(2003)
On their favorite foods
Our favorite restaurants are Panda Express
and Del Taco.
(2003)
And so, when we go home, my Mom and Dad are saying, "Did you see that pig
roasting in the oven?", on a stick, going round and round, with the head...And me and my sister cried for two hours. Well, we became a vegetarian. But that didn't last very long, because I
don't like vegetables. Or salad, nothing like that!
(2003)
On the joys of "sticky eyeball" toys at the dentist
Yeah its a sticky eyeball. But my sister, we take the pupil out of it afterwards. (giggles) No we take the pupil out of it and umm we use the other part, and we cut it up and it looks like butter. So I when we play, we pretend that wefre chefs we put it and pretend itfs butter.
(2003)
On the name 'Dakota'
Actually it's becoming popular now. It's a boy's name. My sister actually met somebody named Dakota that was a boy.
